Wildlife (wild animals and birds), marine fauna (loggerhead sea turtles, dolphins, whales, etc.), but also equines, but above all dozens of stray dogs and cats.<\/p>\n
The Association of Animal Lovers of Lefkada cooperates closely with the state-of-the-art private veterinary clinics of Lefkada. Last year, at least 50 stray animals were neutered by private veterinarians and at least 200 wounded and sick animals received veterinary care (most of which, cured, were fully reintegrated into their natural habitat).<\/p>\n
In the last two years, we have collected at least 43 loggerhead sea turtles, dolphins, dozens of nocturnal birds, young foxes, hawks, seagulls, badgers and a baby sperm whale! In most of them we provided first aid and sent them to the wildlife care center in Aegina (EKPAZ). Those animals that fully recovered were released into their natural habitat. We collaborate with the sea turtle care center “Archelon”, and the cetacean research center “Pelagos”.<\/p>\n
In 2013, after two years of efforts, the Municipality of Lefkada, in cooperation with the Association of Animal Lovers of Lefkada, established a Municipal veterinary clinic. The first municipal veterinary clinic for stray animals in Greece, in which 130 stray animals were neutered, marked, vaccinated in the first six months of its operation. With the help of the Association of Animal Lovers, the Municipality of Lefkada acquired a register of stray animals for adoption.<\/p>\n
We are all volunteers, Greeks and communities of foreigners, with professional and family obligations. Most of us have been hit mercilessly by the economic crisis. The expenses of our association come only from private sponsorships, subscriptions, from your help.<\/p>\n
