The Animal Welfare Association of Marathon “Koiti” consists of volunteer citizens who offer their free time for the protection and welfare of animals in the wider Municipality of Marathon and specifically in the municipal districts of Marathon and Nea Makri as well as in the communities of Grammatiko and Varnava.
The association was founded in October 2014 when a group of animal lovers living in these areas thought that an organized group could offer more than anyone individually. In addition to the division of work and the resulting strength of members resulting from its establishment, a legally recognized association may participate with its members in the five-member committee of the stray animal management program that each Mayor is obliged to establish.
Greek legislation recognizes the Municipality as the exclusive owner and manager of stray pets and in this context any actions of the association are subsidiary to those of the Municipality. To contact the competent authorities of the Municipality call 22943 20957 daily 08:00-14:00.
In the 3 years of operation the volunteers of the association have presented Educational programs In schools in the area, they have made over 100 successful adoptions through the adoption program but also through days of adoption who organize occasionally on the beach of Nea Makri and have called for the prosecution of people who abuse animals, as well as local illegal breeders.
In addition, volunteers have treated, fed, vaccinated and rescued many animals, responded to complaints with on-site intervention and publicized misdeeds of the stray management program of the Municipality of Marathon.
The association has no facilities or accommodation for accommodation and is not a shelter. All animals remain in volunteer homes and yards until they are well and then return to their neighborhoods unless adopted.
To meet its objectives, apart from the annual subscriptions of its regular members, the association accepts and donations of money or related items (e.g. food) and organizes Animal welfare bazaars in which items offered by friends close to the same idea are sold: The cultivation of a spirit of respect for every living being for the right to life.
