The Zoophile Union of Ilioupoli is a recognized animal welfare association since 1997. According to its statutes, it is active in the field of collection, rescue and care of stray animals of the Municipality of Ilioupoli and beyond. Every year it treats, feeds, vaccinates, neuters and promotes for adoption about 300 stray animals (mainly dogs and cats), which it promotes, mainly through the press for adoption. It is a non-profit association and bases its operation on the contributions of its members and the contributions of third parties.
The goal of our Association is “One home and one family for every stray”. “Stray” means any pet that is outside the boundaries of a property and is not accompanied by its owner or temporary owner.
We cooperate with veterinarians in our area for vaccinations, sterilizations and orthopedic surgeries, since we collect several stray animals injured by cars, due to the increased traffic on most of the road network of our region. We keep some strays in private animal shelters when they can’t stay on the street and the costs of keeping them are exorbitant.
We are against euthanasia and only put an animal to sleep when it suffers, when there is no hope of recovery and when we cannot give it the quality of life that every pet is entitled to. The members of our Association work night and day voluntarily and offer their homes for the hospitality of strays -especially those who are in recovery- and their cars for the transportation of animals.
